Troubleshooting MSI Ventus 4080

  1. Ever since I bought this card I have stuggled with random freezes, lockups, etc.
  2. RX 570 in same PC has no issues.
  3. Is it the power supply?
  4. Is it the UPS?
  5. Is it Powrstrip?
  6. Is it Video Card?
  7. I dont' think it's RAM or mobo since RX 570 works fine.
  8. I sent this card back to MSI on 2024-05-22? Returned to me on 2024-06-01?
  9. This seemed to fix things. For a couple of months.

History

  1. Purchased 2023-01-07 for 1250$ from bestbuy
  2. Live with intermittent Issues up through 2024-05
  3. Around this time I started noticing VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE
  4. RMA'd the card but also learned about the new shitty Power Cable standard nvidia introduced
  5. Basically this card can need SO MUCH power it needs 3 lines to a tiny connector that when not connected properly starts fires
  6. I bought a right angle connector cable to hopefully avoid issues
  7. The RMA guy on phone said something about capacitors? But nothing in writing and they mailed it back
  8. For 3 monthes seemed solid
  9. Now I've had a coule reboots VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE and this morning (2024-08-30) my PC Froze while displaying video frozen.
  10. Wnat to start tracking every issue here

New Power Standards

ATX 3.1

  1. ATX 3.1 is mostly about the Connector to the GPU
  2. 12VHPWR connector to the newer 12V-2×6 connector
  3. the PCB Header’s internal pin lengths have been changed, making the power pins being longer and sense pins shorter. This design ensures a "first-mate/last-break" engagement, meaning the power pins connect before the sideband pins, and disconnect after. Such a sequence is pivotal for ensuring safety – and is something that was either overlooked or underestimated when defining the 12VHPWR connector.
  4. Doubling-down on this shift to safety, how the sense pins are interpreted has also been changed. Now if both sense pins are unconnected (open), the ATX 3.1 standard dictates that devices are not to be supplied any power at all. The basis behind this change being that in scenarios where connectors might be incorrectly attached or completely absent, this configuration prevents a PSU from sending power down the line, effectively avoiding potential connector damage or melting.
  5. The changes to the sense pins are a hardware-level change for PSUs. Sense Contacts Open and Open will deliver NO power on a 3.1 PSU. 3.0 will keep delivering it.
  6. Cooler Master Link
  • Considering purchasing a new ATX 3.1 Power Supply.
  • ATX 3.0 is dangerous stay away from it.
  • Corsair RM 850X

My PSU is over 3 years old. It does not support a PCI Express GEN 5 connector. NOT ATX 3.0 or 3.1 compliant. It is 850 watt. Basically I think it might be worth purchasing an ATX 3.1 850 Watt + Power Supply. Now My issues do not occur while gaming so I would think Wattage is not the problem. Still I can't help feeling like something is going on with power draw with how random these problems are.

    UPS

2024-10-13. I have had my PC getting power from CyberPower - 950VA which maxes out at 500 watts. Now I think this also along with using a Insignia Power strip with PC connected in slave not master has been causing my PC stability issues. The 4080 needs constant access to 750 watts. The UPS can't deliver that. Also the power switch on slave might have been messing with stabilitiy. For Now I have it on master with no USP and been running stable since. 2024-10-13 It rebooted. While editing this page in chrome. Going to switch Power Strip now.

    2024-10-22

Rebooted in chrome again. Using different power strip going straight into wall. Ordered a PCI 3.1 NZXT 1200 Watt Power supply.

Just happened again. TDRDelay Reboot while transferring files from a PI in Windows File Explorer. So Trying to change TdrDelay to 10 seconds (default is 2) See here https://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield_4/comments/1xzzn4/tdrdelay_10_fixed_my_crashes_since_last_patch/ I also Wen into Nvidia Control Panel Help and checked Debug Mode. I read some where this disabled any Over Clocks. I don't give two shits about over clocks. I barely game on this thing. I just want to be able to type in Notepad.

    2024-11-13

After increasing TDE Delay I get
    VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (141)
One of the display engines failed to respond in timely fashion.

    VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

Supposedly the problems stop if we go into Nvidia Control Panel
